Mental Skills for Value-Based Living

What is the Mental Skills for Value-Based Living Course?

This Mental Skills for Value-Based Living Course consists of cohorts of professional airline pilots that are looking to develop and level-up their skills for managing states of mental activation. The skills cultivated in this group increase psychological flexibility and are useful for mental performance, resilience, relationships, depression, anxiety, addiction, and all aspects of valued-based living. While this is not intended to be a replacement for individual therapy and coaching, it will accelerate participant’s personal development, which likely results in the need for fewer one-on-one sessions. Although some folks may be hesitant about participating with others, we’ve found the support and camaraderie that develops in this setting is like no other; makes sense since we’re all pilots. The sentiment is most often “Why didn’t I participate in one of these earlier!”

What does the LiftAffect Coach bring to the group?

During the sessions, the LiftAffect Coach will utilize specific types of mental skills coaching to provoke personal development amongst the participants. They are a professional with the right training, experience, and commitment to build trust amongst the participants, mediate discussions, and teach the exercises assigned to the participants.

A message from LiftAffect’s CEO, Matt McNeil

“We wholeheartedly believe that the skills you will learn by participating in this training are one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself and those you care about in your life. For those of you that are in a position to assist others in need, both personally and professionally, this course is an absolute must.”

Below are some FAQ's:

Is this a therapy group?

No. This is a coaching group that will be focusing on building mental skills for managing states of activation (emotions and mental states we want less of) that negatively impact various aspects of our lives (emotions, physical and mental health, relationships, performance, behavior, etc.). The coaching group will also help participants identify individual core values as a means of guiding our decisions and actions to greater fulfillment in our lives

Are participants all people that are currently in therapy or coaching?

No. Some are and some aren’t. Some are simply there for coaching, and some are looking to add this as an accelerant to the individual therapy or coaching they are currently receiving. One of our missions at LiftAffect is to de-stigmatize mental health issues that MANY professional pilots are burdened with. Mental health issues have nothing to do with being weak or unstable and pilots are a neglected and underground population due to regulatory policies that are unscientific and punitive. As the individuals and professionals that we are, quite frankly WE DESERVE BETTER. We find that pilots that seek therapy or coaching to better themselves demonstrate strength, prudence, and ability of the highest caliber.

What if I miss a meeting?

While we encourage you do to your absolute best to make it to the weekly meeting, we understand that isn’t always feasible. All meetings will be record for you to view on your own.

Can we guarantee confidentiality?

No. This is one of the reasons that this is not a therapy group. With that said, one of the things we really try to protect is client confidentiality. In a group like this, where there are several participants, we do not have the ability to guarantee that what happens in here will remain confidential. We all take a bit of a leap of faith in here, taking the chance to participate anyway in order to get something out of the process. We each have the ability to take the risk, and we each have the ability to protect the confidentiality of this group. I can certainly commit to that. Would you be willing to make a commitment that you will not share what happens in the group elsewhere? We’ve found in the past that given the profession we all are in, confidentiality remains highly intact and poses little threat. In fact, we’ve never experienced a breach of confidentiality with groups.

What if I know someone in the group?

Then you know a fellow “bad ass” that is looking to level-up their game that you can high-five, handshake, nod, or give a hug to when you run into each other at the terminal or hotel shuttle. Honestly, we’re not in the business of increasing the stigmatization of mental health and mental performance issues that professional pilots often struggle with. We’re all high-achieving professionals that are looking to take care of ourselves and our families by ensuring that we’re operating at our best. We’re here to help people improve themselves, not hide and increase stigmatization.
